SURE Trainees

Society for Urban Ecology (SURE) offers students exciting opportunities of „International SURE Internships“ 

We are seeking highly motivated students who are interested to work with SURE and are willingly to support the organization, communication and documentation of current SURE activities including a range of projects and events across the globe.

Terms and conditions

The internship can be done in Berlin (Germany) and/or Salzburg (Austria). The intern, however, may work from a third location remotely.

SURE will not provide any financial support which means that the internee will be liable to cover all cost associated with travelling and accommodation during the course of this internship. However, other forms of support may be availed upon mutual agreement.

At the end of the internship, the internee will receive a certificate of internship and one year free membership of SURE to continue his/her affiliation with SURE.

All SURE internees must sign the SURE trainee policies.

Application Procedure

Interested candidates (at bachelor, master or PhD level) shall apply with a motivation letter and a full CV to Martina Artmann. Information on SURE’s current projects and events can be found at www.society-urban-ecology.org

For our SURE members we also offer internships within our co-operations with Shanghai, Guatemala, Karachi, Bogota and Buenos Aires. These offers can be used only by a preliminary inquiry. If you are interested please contact the SURE President, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Breuste

 

Shanghai

Project: Urban ecology and urban green in Shanghai (China) (since 2008)

Head: Prof. Dr. Jürgen Breuste (RG Urban and Landscape Ecology; University Salzburg, Austria), Dr. Junxiang Li (Shanghai, China)
Co-operation partners: Department „Environmental Studies“, East China Normal University, Shanghai

Outcomes: Several theses were developed within this project:

Public green spaces in Shanghai. A contribution to the socio-ecological functionality of megacities. (PhD thesis by Nicole Stern)

Urban renewal through urban greening in Shanghai on the example of Changning District. (Master thesis by Aisa Henseke)

Analysis and evaluation of soil sealing and its consequences using the urban structure type approach at the Shanghai Hongkou District. (Master thesis by Dominic Wallner)

 

Guatemala

Projects: Sustainable city development in areas of urban cultural heritage (Guatemala) (2010-2013); Urban Ecosystem Services in Quetzaltenango and Antigua Guatemala (since 2011)

Workshops with local stakeholders in Baranquilla, Medellin and Bogotá (February 2014, supervised by Prof. Jürgen Breuste, University Salzburg, Austria);

Internship visit in Bogota from Austrian student in 2014

 

Buenos Aires 

Projects: Conservation and management of urban nature, Argentina (2008-2015);

Head: Prof. Dr. Jürgen Breuste (RG Urban and Landscape Ecology; University Salzburg, Austria); Prof. Dr. Ing. Ana M. Faggi (Buenos Aires)

Co-operation partners: Faculty of Engineering Ecology, University de Flores, Buenos Aires (Argentina); Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences (MACN) (Argentina);

Outcomes: 

Evaluation of the river basin and its ecological status and use and perception by the population.

Development of a handbook for the sustainable development of the Matanza-Riachuelo river banks in Buenos Aires based on pilot studies

Several visits of the Salzburg team in Buenos Aires and partners from Argentina were conducted

 

Karachi 

Projects: Ecosystem services by urban green space; mapping and monitoring for health and wellbeing (2006 – );
