URBAN + MOUNTAINS – Sustainable Natural Resource Use in Arctic and High Mountainous Areas

The SURE Summer School was one of the events, celebrating in the 10th year of anniversary of the Society for Urban Ecology (SURE).
The focus of the summer school was on the relation of urban environment and mountainous conditions (URBAN + MOUNTAINS), a very rare investigated subject. The city of Salzburg, Austria in a cross-border region of Austria and Germany, close related to the Northern Limestone Alps was an excellent location to learn about this on many examples.
The program consisted of four days indoor presentations, exercises and seminars in 16 modules guided by 19 reputed international lecturers from 15 countries (Austria, Belarus, China, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, India, Iran, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, and Turkey). It included a one-day seminar on Mountain Cities and Towns, two one-day excursions to the Austrian UNESCO Geopark Ore of the Alps and the only German alpine National Park Berchtesgaden, and five days Research Week on Urban Biodiversity of Urban Allotment Gardens, Drought Resistance of Urban Street Trees and Nature Perceptions using Photographs.
The summer school was organized by Society for Urban Ecology (SURE) in cooperation with the University of Salzburg (Austria) and with the Erasmus+ CBHE project Sustainable Natural Resource Use in Arctic and High Mountainous Areas and regional (Austrian UNESCO Geopark Ore of the Alps, and the only German alpine National Park Berchtesgaden) and international partners.
54 students from 8 countries (Austria, China, Germany, India, Iran, Russia, Turkey) participated successfuly.
8th SURE Summer School is planned for 202o in Shanghai, China.
